Acne
FAQ
What
causes acne?
Acne occurs in places where you find a hair follicle, sebaceous glands and a hair. Sebaceous glands produce sebum that keeps the skin and hair moisturized. When the production of sebum is increased the gland swells and the oil causes acne. After the teenage years, the sebum decreases as the hormones level out.
Where can I get acne?
Acne can be found on the face, arms, neck, shoulders and back. In fact it can be found everywhere except the palms, soles, top of feet and the lower lip. This shows how widespread acne can be. It is far more than just a face skin condition.
What makes acne worse?
There are a number of things that you stop using to prevent acne from getting any worse. For example, stop using any oil based make-up, suntan oil, hair gels and sprays. You should avoid stressful situations as these times can cause acne to increase.
Don’t pick at your spots or squeeze them. This causes more inflammation and takes them take more time to heal. Don’t get too much exposure to the sun.
Who can get acne?
Both boys and girls get acne, as do many adults later in life. Acne is generally more severe with boys because they have more skin oils and changing testosterone levels during adolescence.
Can over the counter products help acne?
Yes. Many treatments work and can be found over the counter. You can try Benzoyl, resorcinol, salicylic acid and sulphur as they are the most common ways to treat acne and you don’t need your doctor’s approval. You can find them in gel form, creams, lotions and pads.
What are the most common acne myths?
Acne is not caused by dirt. Acne is not caused by eating chocolate or fried foods. Acne is not caused from sexual activity. Acne is not caused by masturbation. All of the above are very common myths that people tend to believe cause acne. They are not true.
Should I see a doctor?
If your acne is not getting better then you should see a doctor. He or she is likely to give you more information and categorise your acne. Once you know the cause and type of acne that you have then you can find a more suitable way to treat and remove it.
Do antibiotics work?
Yes. In many cases antibiotics completely cure the acne. They are usually very effective at treating acne and have an instant impact. You can take antibiotics in gel form, tablet form or via cream to the affected area.
Will I get acne scars?
This depends of the type of acne that you have and how severe it is. It also depends on whether you pick your spots or try to squeeze them. If you do squeeze them, you are likely to have small scars. If you have a very severe form of acne, then you are likely to have scars, but you can lessen the effect with lotions and creams.
