Acne
Myths & Misconceptions
There
are many misconceptions about acne, as most of the population don’t
really understand the skin condition, what causes it and how it is
created. This article is going to expel and remove many of the most
common myths that are widespread in today’s age.
Eating greasy food causes acne.
This is a very common myth. In fact, easting greasy food or fried food does not cause acne. Many scientific studies have been commissioned on this subject and all of them were inconclusive about the link between fried/ greasy food and acne.
Eating chocolate causes acne
The chocolate myth is another very strong and widely held belief that is not true. Most people give advice to others about avoiding chocolate in order to stop acne from forming, but there is no evidence that this has any effect at all.
A sun tan can cure acne
Many people believe than getting sun exposure or having sun tan can help with acne. While a sun tan can cover some of the redness and swelling that is caused by acne, it will not heal or prevent acne in the first place. Also, don’t forget the considerable risks associated with sun exposure, tanning beds and UV rays. In the long run this myth can cause skin damage of another kind so it might cause more harm than good.
Regular face washing
A common myth is that regular face washing will reduce and remove acne. While washing your face more often will remove more oil and dead skin, it will not prevent more breakouts. In fact, washing your face too often can remove many of the essential oils that lead your face to be become very dry and irritated. This is also very uncomfortable. This won’t affect your acne but it is very uncomfortable to live with, so I would not recommend it.
Don’t wash your face too often and you will allow your own body’s natural oils to work by themselves. This will remove the dirt and dead skin that clogs up your pores and causes scars to form.
Popping spots
There is a myth around popping blackheads, pimples and spots. This myth says that doing so will help to clear up the acne more quickly. This is not true at all. Popping a pimple can make it less noticeable but in the long run you will be left with a scar. On top of that, it will make the healing process much longer than it would have been if you had just left it to heal naturally. When you pop a spot it causes the bacteria to be pushed to the surface making the surrounding area of the skin more red and irritated. Don’t use any devises that are designed to pop blackheads, as they are not safe. They will cause scars to form.
As you can see, there are many myths about acne. Now that you have read through the most commonly held beliefs about acne, you will see through them and be able to proceed in a safe, practical and more sensible approach to acne prevention and removal.
