Acne
is something that affects many people throughout their lifetime. Many
people think that acne is restricted to those people in their teenage
years, but this is not the case. In many instances it can affect
thousands of people in adulthood. In fact, some of the numbers might
be surprising to many people.
Acne is a dermatological term that includes a number of more specific terms. Such things included are clogged pores, lumps, pimples or cysts on the human body. Acne is not only restricted to the face. Acne can occur on the face, back, neck, shoulders and upper arms.
Acne is classed as a disease and comes in a number of different varieties that can vary in their severity. Although none of them threaten the life of the person suffering, they can cause severe disfigurement, permanent scarring and leave lasting damage in the previously effected areas. There are also a number of emotional scars that occur with acne. Because it is a skin disease, it is very troubling for the person who suffers from it and can cause a lack of confidence, self esteem and even depression in some cases.
The physical effects that acne has on the skin are classed in five different ways. These are comedos, papule, pustule, nodule and cyst. These terms are used to rank the severity of the acne. At the lower end is the comedo, which is also called a blackhead or whitehead, and at the upper end is the cyst.
Acne is formed when a hair follicle becomes clogged with oil. At first this will cause a whitehead or blackhead to appear, but as more and more oil fills the pore, it will enlarge the skin, causing it to become inflamed. It will then turn into a pimple.
Of course this can be treated and there are many types of medicines and creams that can be applied to the acne infected skin. The type of treatment that is used depends on the type of acne that is present.
A common type of non-inflammatory acne occurs when a plugged hair follicle is located beneath the skin. It then appears as a whitehead and has a small bump. This is called a whitehead.
If the comedo is open then this is called a blackhead. This is formed when the plug enlarges and is pushed to the surface of the skin. Many people think the dark color of the blackhead is because of dirt, but this is not the case. It is caused because of the dark pigment of the skin. This pigment is called melanin. Blackheads are classed as a type of inflammatory acne.
Another very common form of acne is called papules. These are small, firm bumps that appear on the surface of the skin. They are very often sore to touch, but can clear after a few days. These can be classed as inflammatory or non-inflammatory acne.
Acne is more generally found in adolescent boys, but it is also common in girls. Usually the difference here is that young men are more likely to have a form of long term acne, while women tend to have brief spells in line with hormonal changes in their bodies.
As you now know what acne is and a number of the different types, you should consult your doctor or medical physician and get them to provide you a suitable treatment. You need to know the origin of your acne in order to get the right treatment and clear it up.
